Strong public schools depend on effective leadership

Interested Iowans should consider school board service

The Iowa Association of School Boards and Martensdale-St. Marys CSD urge Iowans passionate about education to consider running for election to their local school boards. Public schools need strong leadership and governance to ensure a bright future for all children and communities across the state.

Nominations for open seats can be filed between Monday, July 10 and Thursday, August 3, at 5 p.m. School board elections will take place Tuesday, September 12, 2017.

Open Seats Include:  District 1, 2 and 4

Strong leadership in each school district is critical to moving education forward in our state. School board members play significant roles in their communities – they must have leadership, vision and dedication. These locally elected public officials are charged with accountability for student learning, determining educational goals, setting policy, overseeing school finances and more.

School board members are elected to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years. Those elected receive no pay. Experienced school board members say the rewards of service lie in meeting the needs of children and communities.

For questions on obtaining papers or district boundaries, please contact Jill Gavin at jill_gavin@mstm.us or 641-764-2608.

Summer Band Lessons

Hello band students and parents:

Summer is almost here!

I will be offering lessons for students that would like to enhance their skills over the summer.  Lessons will be offered on Tuesdays during the beginning of June and then two weeks before school begins for the 2017-2018 school year. Students may sign up for both sessions or an individual session depending on  their summer schedules. The dates for lesson days are June 6 and 13 and August 8 and 15. If needed, I will add another day if Tuesdays are filled.

There will be no cost for lessons. Students will meet with me in the music room during their assigned time. Please email me with interest and your preferred time. I plan on beginning at about 9 am. Individual lessons will be twenty minutes in length and geared towards each student’s level. This is an opportunity for students to work individually to master their instrument of choice.

If questions, please feel free to contact me.

Respectfully,

Randy Olson
