Connecting Families to Critical Care: EveryStep Health & Support Programs

As a school, we recognize our vital role in connecting students and families to the support services they need to thrive. To ensure all children in our community have access to quality health care and support, we are sharing information about two key programs available through EveryStep in Madison, Warren, Dallas, and Polk Counties.

Affordable Health Insurance: Hawki and Medicaid Assistance

Many families who qualify for affordable insurance are unaware of their eligibility. EveryStep's Hawki outreach program works to solve this problem by helping families explore and apply for coverage.

  • Hawki (Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa) Coverage: This program offers affordable health and dental insurance for children and teens. Unlike other programs, Hawki serves a wide range of family incomes. Premiums are set on a sliding scale, but no family pays more than $40 per month, regardless of the number of children enrolled.
  • Presumptive Eligibility (PE) Medicaid: EveryStep staff can assist children and pregnant women with the PE Medicaid process, which provides same-day temporary coverage and can lead directly to ongoing Medicaid or Hawki enrollment. EveryStep also helps families establish medical and dental homes.

Support for First-Time Mothers: Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP)

EveryStep also offers the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), a proven, evidence-based home visiting program dedicated to supporting first-time moms.

  • Ongoing Support: Families are matched with specially trained nurses who provide education and build a trusted relationship, beginning during the mother's pregnancy and continuing until the child turns two years old.
  • Lasting Impact: This support leads to measurable, long-term impact, resulting in healthier children and families better equipped for success.
