Our Extended Learning Program is designed to meet the needs of students who show advanced abilities and talents. The program looks different at each grade level as students grow and develop:
Grades K–3 (Enrichment Services) In the early grades, students may take part in Enrichment Services, which are different from formal ELP placement. During this stage, students are grouped by content areas and may work with the ELP teacher based on classroom teacher nominations, student performance, and other data. These groups are flexible and change periodically, giving students opportunities to be challenged in areas of strength. This stage is considered a “trial” for ELP, allowing the ELP teacher to become familiar with many students before they may be formally considered for the program. Participation in Enrichment Services does not mean a student has been formally identified for ELP.
Grade 3 Identification Process In third grade, students take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). These results, along with other academic and behavioral data, are reviewed by the ELP Committee using an identification matrix. The identification process takes place during third grade so that students may begin their 4th grade year formally identified for ELP.
Grades 4–6 Formally identified students meet regularly with the district’s elementary ELP teacher. Student performance is reviewed on an ongoing basis, and adjustments to program placement may be made as needed.
Grades 7–12 At the secondary level, ELP becomes more independent and student-driven. Beginning in 7th grade, ELP is an optional elective course that can be taken for credit. While students are not required to enroll in the course to remain in ELP, all secondary ELP students must complete at least one self-directed project per semester (two per year) in an area of personal strength or interest. Students enrolled in the course have the benefit of working closely with the secondary ELP teacher for additional support and guidance throughout their projects.
Our Enhanced Learning Program is designed to grow with students, providing appropriate challenges, fostering independence, and encouraging them to explore their unique strengths and passions.
